Hi Dariusz

You say that for the vast majority of the time, "the smart meters sit inertly and wait".  That may be the case if averaged over 6 minutes but not if you consider brief transient spikes.

Apparently in Australia once 90% of all buildings in a region have a smart meter installed the system goes active, until then you are correct that the smart meters are mostly inert. However, when that 90% has been achieved the smart meter becomes more active 24/7. The exception to this is when there are solar panels on the roof feeding back into the grid. In this case the smart meter will already be active.
One such smart meter which I measured recently on a home in Victoria was emitting (at 1 foot) three RF spikes every two minutes. Ambient power levels were .004 mW/m2 (okay) but spiking up to 67.4 mW/m2. This spike is significantly higher than what one would be exposed to when having a DECT phone by the bedhead (about 1.2 mW/m2 at 1 foot). This was constant during the 1/2 hour measurement time I was there. Whether or not this is the case at other times of the day and for other smart meters in the area will need to be confirmed (underway) but for this particular meter that is hardly what I would call sitting inertly.

It is not unusual to find in many Australian homes that the electrical meter box has been placed on a bedroom wall, with a bedhead hard up against that wall. As I have seen on numerous cases and published papers about, in this situation the powerfrequency magnetic fields can cause insomnia and fatigue in some people. What will be the effects, however, once a smart meter has been installed near a bedhead and RF/MW is added as well?  It is my understanding that the pineal gland may sense impinging electromagnetic fields as ‘light’ and suppress nocturnal melatonin release. If this be the case I suspect that those frequent smart meter energy spikes may have a deleterious effect on anybody trying to sleep nearby. For that reason, as a precautionary measure, the new meters should not be placed on bedroom walls.  Whatever the case may be, with the ubiquitous roll-out of smart grids and meters, if there are health effects it may soon be apparent. Then what?
You also mention about "who is profiting from spreading this scare" and the need to discuss potential conflicts of interests. I wholeheartedly agree with you but suggest we widen that discussion to include who is profiting from promoting this technology and the conflicts of interests they may have.
